The Pour

Retro-looking design and chrome finish aside, the Hario pour over coffee kettle is quite comfortable to use. It can be used on a gas, electric, or induction stove with no problems, but be careful not to fill it all the way to the top or water will boil out of the spout. The spout and handle are firmly attached, and while the steel kettle feels somewhat on the light side, it’s not flimsy as some users have claimed.

The lid fits rather loosely, however, and can fall out when tipped at an extreme angle. Also, while the angled handle stayed cool to grip, its straight design may feel awkward and uncomfortable to some. Luckily, the gooseneck spout gives excellent control to the water flow – we were able to vary our pouring height and flow rate very easily without experiencing turbulence, and pulse brewing was not an issue either. With this kettle you can easily make 2 or 3 cups of pour over coffee.

To prevent rusting over the long term, empty out the water in the kettle (even when all the water is poured out, there will be some pooled at the bottom since the spout is not positioned at the very bottom) and dry with a towel after rinsing.

Finally, some users have complained about the difficulty of cleaning the Hario pour over coffee kettle and we’d like to remind everyone that you should only use filtered water when brewing pour over coffee. Not because hard water will cause scaling in your kettle, but because the water will affect the taste of your coffee! With filtered water, you shouldn’t have any problems with cleaning your kettle and will get a much more flavorful cup of pour over coffee.

While the Hario pour over coffee kettle isn’t perfect, it’s suitable for those who don’t want to splurge on an electric gooseneck kettle, and should last you for a while.
